Loop Staff attends King of Thailand's Birthday Celebration
On December 5th, 2009, Loop Program Director Jane Cassie and this summer's Academic Director Brian Cassie were privileged to attend a birthday celebration for Thailand's reigning king, King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
The King, who is known to the Thai people as King Rama IX, was born in Cambridge, MA while his parents were studying in the medical fields in Cambridge. King Rama IX was the first royal leader in the world to be born a US citizen. He is loved and revered by his people.
The December celebration was held at Mount Auburn Hospital, where the King was born. The King of Thailand Birthplace Foundation put together an impressive event, featuring American and Thai performers. Most notably, Ms. Duangpon Pongphasuk, a classical and modern dancer and singer from Thailand, performed.
The event was a great reminder for us of the ties between Thailand and the United States. It is just one example of how connections you make across the globe may be relevant just around the corner.
