Maria Camila Nieto, DVM
Veterinarian
Dr. Camila grew up between Australia, Colombia, and New York, but it was her early years in Australia that sparked her deep love for wildlife.
She earned her veterinary degree in Colombia before completing the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) program, allowing her to practice in the United States, where she has lived most of her life. Her work has taken her across the globe, providing veterinary care to a wide range of species, from domestic pets to endangered wildlife.
From the beginning of her veterinary journey, she was drawn to exotic and wild animals. She worked as a zoo veterinarian before returning to the U.S. and developed a strong passion for anesthesia, particularly in exotic and wildlife medicine. She has had the privilege of participating in conservation projects focused on the immobilization and relocation of various species, including bears, large carnivores, and megaherbivores.
Additionally, she has worked in Africa, assisting in efforts to combat illegal wildlife trade and providing veterinary care for rescued animals. Currently, she is pursuing a Master’s in Conservation Medicine at The University of Edinburgh while working in New York as a relief veterinarian for small animal and exotic hospitals. She also offers private house-call services for exotic animals, which allows her the flexibility to engage in conservation projects in Africa whenever opportunities arise. In the future, she hopes to contribute to research on species conservation. Outside of her veterinary work, she enjoys spending time with her husband, family, and pets.
She has a wide range of interests, including wildlife photography, drawing, reading, and outdoor activities. Her dedication to conservation and animal health continues to shape her career, and she looks forward to sharing her knowledge and experience with the next generation of veterinarians.
