Want to gain a unique career experience? Ready to travel internationally with both independence and support? Consider joining one of our incredible animal internships abroad!
Our veterinary, research, and animal experience internships abroad offer students an amazing opportunity to pursue their love of travel while also earning valuable career experience. Compared to our study abroad programs, our internships give students more flexibility when traveling. They’re perfect for students or other adults who want to gain hands-on experience but with the freedom to travel and spend time on their own. They’re also great for those who don’t want to navigate the logistics of finding and vetting their own internship opportunity or housing abroad.
Similar to traditional internships, our animal internships abroad provide placement with one of our partner projects. Through this placement, you’ll have a set place to intern each day where you’ll shadow, observe, or assist as needed. These internships provide experience that can be used on a resume and some colleges and universities may even accept internship credit for them.
Please note that Loop Abroad internships are quite different from Loop Abroad programs. You will not have a Loop Abroad staff member with you each day, you do not have a Loop Abroad teaching vet, and you do
not have activities and transportation scheduled and provided for you. Internships offer you the flexibility of traveling and exploring on your own with the safety and support of an in-country support coordinator, as well as a traditional shadowing internship placement at one of our partner projects. At all internships, you should expect to be on-site approximately 35-40 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
This internship is for anyone seeking to gain research hours required to be able to apply for Vet Schools. Students should have a deep interest in wildlife conservation and the capacity to work in the field in challenging conditions.
If you and a friend are applying together and would like to intern together and be housed together, please contact us at[email protected] to assist you.
Must be 18+ to apply.
This wildlife research and conservation internship with Nkonzo Wildlife in South Africa is a one-of-a-kind opportunity that is available only through Loop Abroad!
Spend two to four weeks at research stations in the northern reaches of Limpopo helping with projects such as rhino and giraffe research and conservation, snare removal to prevent wildlife poaching and invasive plant removal to protect the native habitat.
You will work in the field alongside rangers, researchers and conservationists as part of Nkonzo’s active mission to ‘safeguard the natural world for future generations.’ Interns on this program will gain a deeper understanding of the human impact on endangered species in the wild and will acquire invaluable experience with various methods of data collection and analysis.
Every internship will vary, but here is an example of the kind of research you’ll be working on during your internship:
The duration of the internship can be 2 weeks or 4 weeks.
The two-week internship fee is $2,300 USD. The four-week internship fee is $4,500 USD.
Included: housing, all meals, transport from any location in Polokwane to the Research Camp and vice versa upon arrival and departure, training, internship placement, 24/7 support.
Not included: Travel expenses to Polokwane, medical insurance, entertainment expenses, meals, activities for two days off per week.
The Gilman Scholarship could fund $5000 of your tuition plus there is an additional STEM Supplemental Award of $1000 you an apply for. The next round of applications opens mid-January and the deadline is Thursday, March 6, 2025 at 11:59pm Pacific Time.

Provided housing is a shared room that sleeps four people with single beds that has a common area, shared bathrooms, a kitchen and a barbecue area. Interns will have access to basic Wi-Fi with limited bandwidth and warm running water.
Camps are powered by municipal electricity and therefore regularly experience scheduled power outages. Each camp has an ‘African bush laundry’ where you can handwash your clothes.
Three meals a day will be included every day of the internship. A weekly supply run into town is scheduled for provisions. Depending on vehicles and staff needs, we may only be able to take one participant at a time. This means you will be able to get necessities once a week, but may have to give your shopping list to another participant who will shop for you.
You can receive one credit hour from Culver-Stockton College for every 40 internship hours for this program. (Additional fee applies.)
