This two-week adventure of a lifetime gives you the opportunity to go to Thailand to volunteer at an Elephant Sanctuary in Northern Thailand, providing hands-on care, love, and support for the 100+ elephants who live there. You’ll also have to opportunity to work with our staff vet to care for dogs at a dog rescue clinic in Chiang Mai, Thailand where you will get hands-on practice providing medical care. You will also get the chance to experience magnificent Thailand first-hand.

This program is for current students in a vet tech program (either in-person or online). The program will be taught by a Loop Abroad veterinarian who will lead lessons and labs.

The program will start in-country on a Sunday and end on a Saturday. This generally means that participants will need to depart from the United States one day before the program begins, and will generally return to the United States one day after the program ends.
$3,450 USD not including international airfare. You will need to arrange your own flight to arrive in Chiang Mai, Thailand for the program. Chiang Mai has an international airport (CNX) which is well-signed in English and easy to navigate for English-speaking visitors. We will provide you the information you need to choose a flight, and we will pick you up at the airport on arrival.
Your space is not held until your $1,000 deposit (credited toward tuition) is paid. Balance of your tuition is due prior to travel. Interest-free payment plans are available.
All housing, meals, and activities are included in your tuition. Tuition does not include medical insurance – if you don’t have medical insurance that covers you while abroad, you can purchase travel medical insurance. We can help you find a plan that meets our insurance requirements.
This program is created with students pursuing a career in the veterinary field. The program provides the following hours:

A transcript for 2 college credits hours of “Elephant Management and Medicine” and 1 college credit hour of “Companion Animal Management” is available for this program (additional fee applies). This course is the academic component of your program.
COVID-19 vaccinations are recommended, but they are longer be required.
All participants must follow the Loop Abroad COVID policies, which include testing negative 2 days before travel, reporting symptoms if they arise during the program, masking or testing if asked to by staff, and isolating if you test positive.

CHIANG MAI
Affectionately known as the “Rose of the North,” Chiang Mai draws over one million tourists a year from all over the world. It is the largest city in Northern Thailand, over 400 miles from Bangkok. Culturally, it is a world away, set in a mountainous rainforest.
Chiang Mai is a city of surprises and contradictions. Once the center of the ancient Lanna kingdom, the old city walls and brick Buddhist stupas remind passers-by of the city’s 700-year history.
Scooters and tuk-tuks zip by an old man peddling his tricycle taxi. A janitor kneels to offer rice and incense at a spirit house in front of the luxury shopping mall. The market air is rich with the smell of curry spices. Across the road, a cafe sells cappuccinos in air-conditioning with high-speed internet.
It’s this mix of local and global, ancient and modern, West and East that makes Chiang Mai an exciting place to live and learn. Come explore beautiful Chiang Mai with us!
DOG RESCUE CLINIC
The Dog Rescue Clinic is about 45 minutes from the heart of Chiang Mai. Here, students spend their days learning about veterinary medicine and assisting Thai veterinarians to provide free care and sterilizations to dogs and cats in need.
The clinic rooms at Dog Rescue Clinic are our classrooms. Throughout the typical week of a Veterinary Service program, we provide much-needed physical exams, ear cleanings, de-worming, attention to wounds and infections, preventative medicine, treatment, and grooming.
Dogs staying at Dog Rescue Clinic are available for adoption but only in Thailand. Our support is vital to these dogs’ lives, and we’re happy to help them with medical care, funding, and lots of love.
ELEPHANT NATURE PARK
The Elephant Nature Park (ENP) is only one of many projects of the Save Elephant Foundation and it’s home to over sixty elephants who are either no longer able to work in elephant-based industries or have been rescued from inhumane conditions in logging, trekking, or circus operations. Its founder, Lek Chailert, has been recognized time and again for tireless efforts to improve the lives of elephants in SE Asia.
At the sanctuary, the elephants are provided space to roam, food to eat, and regular medical care by the three full-time veterinarians. Most importantly, the females and young males are allowed to form close-knit social groups where, as the Lek describes it, they “teach each other how to be elephants again” after years of social isolation practices used by industry to control their behavior.
The sanctuary is vast, peaceful, and amazing.
For students spending a week here, you’ll wake up to trunk-trumpeting and thumping behind your room. In the morning, look out the window to see the fog lifting and just a few feet away. A mother elephant throws dirt over its back while a baby elephant ruffles through the tall grass with its trunk. For the rest of the day, you’ll be a part of their family. It’s like living in a wildlife documentary.
For week-long volunteers, each day at the Elephant Nature Park is different, but the general schedule includes a rotating set of responsibilities shared by the volunteers and the staff: buying, cutting, and picking food for the elephants (no small task), and cleaning up after the elephants. Students participating in our Veterinary Service programs will also shadow the team of Thai and foreign vets who make rounds doing check-ups, cleaning wounds, monitoring infections, or treating more serious diseases or injuries.
The best part of the ENP experience is the time volunteers have to independently learn about and interact with the elephants and their caretakers. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about animal behaviors, elephant family behaviors, local conservation efforts, and the local animal habitats.
Rescuing as many animals as possible has led ENP to become quite the menagerie. In addition to elephants, the park has rescued over 500 dogs, most of whom were rescued from the 2011 flooding in Bangkok. The park is also home to water buffalo, cats, pigs, chickens, and rabbits, and there may be opportunities to help with any and all animals at the park depending on their current needs.

The Elephant Nature Park isn’t home to just elephants. It’s home to buffalo, cows, cats, dogs, and chickens. There are dogs who live among the elephants and welcome visitors when they arrive who have always been a part of the ENP. But after the floods in Bangkok in 2011, Lek and her husband Darrick and the people at the ENP set out specifically to rescue the dogs abandoned in the floods and give them a home.
The mission of the ENP is to provide dogs with a place of refuge and a peaceful, permanent living environment. Each dog gets individual medical care, attention, care, and space. In addition to providing a long-term animal care facility, the ENP also provides community outreach services to residents in the areas surrounding the park. Subsidized preventative health care services and sterilizations surgeries help to keep pets healthy and stem the prevent overpopulation of street animals.
Since 2011, the park has taken in over 400 dogs into its Dog Sanctuary. Over 200 were rescued from the flooding in Bangkok, and another 200 dogs have been rescued from local villages or from the dog meat trade.
Being at the Elephant Nature Park for a week will give students the chance to help some dogs who are in great need of love, attention, and care. The Dog Sanctuary welcomes students to put together a donation of collars, leashes, toys, towels and blankets.
This program is divided into two weeks. In one week, students work with our staff vet to care for dogs at a local dog rescue clinic in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Students get hands-on practice providing medical care to dogs in need. The other week is spent at the Elephant Nature Park, providing care and support for the 100+ elephants who live there.
This program is adapted from our Thailand pre-veterinary program to focus on skills and knowledge for vet techs during our time at the dog clinic and when working with the cats at the Elephant Nature Park.
By bringing our own vet to the dog rescue clinic, we provide necessary treatments and surgeries to local dogs in need. Students assisting with procedures and surgeries and learning hands-on from the vet.
Here are some of the activities you can expect to participate in:
Students will likely also have the chance to meet world-renowned conservationist and ENP founder Lek Chailert, and will get to learn a bit of Thai.
Participate in a classroom-based course taught by a Loop Abroad veterinarian to learn more about elephants, companion animals, and their care. In addition, your vet will help you learn about elephant anatomy and physiology, body condition scores, and behavior. You’ll get to work with some of the elephants on the property one-on-one.
In the evenings and over the weekend, we will have a chance to explore city life in Chiang Mai, including visits to local street markets for eating and shopping, and dinners at local restaurants.
Loop Abroad’s groups will have the opportunity to assist the staff in all aspects of caring for the Elephants and other animals. There will be ample opportunities to observe the animals amidst work time.
A note on safety: At the Elephant Nature Park, elephants are accompanied by at least one trained caretaker at all times. The Elephant Nature Park has been hosting volunteers since the early 1990s and has an exemplary safety record. All dogs at the clinic and the Elephant Nature Park have been vaccinated against rabies.

Every program begins with a safety orientation. We’ll discuss how to stay safe and healthy during your time in Thailand. We’ll also discuss best practices for staying safe with all of the different species we will be interacting with, and staff will always be on hand to further instruct students regarding safe interactions with animals.
While most dogs are very friendly, some would rather be left alone. It is important to approach all dogs carefully. In order to safely interact with animals in a shelter and clinic setting, students and staff need to have an understanding of animal handling and behavior.
Staff and students will discuss animal behavior, including signs of anxiety, and animal handling and restraint before interacting with the dogs.
At the Elephant Nature Park, we work only with female elephants. Elephants are accompanied by at least one trained caretaker at all times. The Elephant Nature Park has been hosting volunteers since the early 1990s and has an exemplary safety record. All dogs at ARK and the Elephant Nature Park have been vaccinated against rabies.
You will have the opportunity to get plenty of up-close photos with elephants, but it is important to also allow the elephants to have the freedom to enjoy their natural environment and the company of their elephant friends. It can be even more rewarding to watch the elephants interacting with their natural environment from a distance because this is when their true personalities shine!
Students will always be accompanied by trained guides and volunteer coordinators who will instruct students on how to safely interact with the elephants.

Chasing the Dragon’s Tail: The Struggle to Save Thailand’s Wild Cats, by Alan Rabinowitz. Alan Rabinowitz is one of the leading authors on protecting large cats in the wild. He is the director of the Science and Exploration Program at the Wildlife Conservation Society, and has led research expeditions all over the world. He is known for founding the world’s first jaguar reserve, which lies in Belize. This book is a sad and beautiful tale of the author’s struggle to understand Thailand and to help save the wild cat population of Thailand.
A Chant to Soothe Wild Elephants, by Jaed Coffin. Jaed Coffin lives in Maine, and was raised in the United States as a Thai American. When he was twenty-one-years-old, he left college life in New England to be ordained as a Buddhist Monk in his mother’s native village of Panomsarakram, Thailand. This book is the story of his time in Thailand, and explores themes of displacement, ethnic identity, and cultural belonging. (NOTE: this book isn’t about elephants.)
When Elephants Weep: The Emotional Lives of Animals, by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson and Susan McCarthy. This New York Times Bestseller was heralded as “A masterpiece, the most comprehensive and compelling argument for animal sensibility…”. Elephants are the national animal of Thailand, and are an important symbol in religion and culture there. They are also intelligent, social animals who are on the brink of extinction in Asia and Africa. This text is a great exploration of the emotional lives of elephants and an eye-opening tale for students of conservation and the behavior of animals, human or otherwise.
Elephant Memories, by Cynthia Moss. Cynthia Moss is founder and director of the Amboseli Elephant Research Project in Africa. As a study of a family of African Elephants in Kenya over twenty-seven years, this book is a moving and important book. “One is soon swept away by this ‘Babar’ for adults. By the end, one wants to curse human civilization and cry out, ‘Now God stand up for the elephants!’”, wrote Christopher Lehmann-Haupt of the New York Times.
Tales of an African Vet, by Dr. Roy Aronson Booklist says, “For a veterinarian, it’s one thing when one’s patients are cuddly pet cats, dogs, and the occasional hamster. It’s quite another when the cats turn out to be cheetahs, the dogs are part wolf, and the hamster? Well, that could be anything from a gorilla to an elephant, a puff adder to a crocodile. Last Chain on Billie: How one Extraordinary Elephant Escaped the Big Top, by Carol Bradley ” Like the majority of captive elephants, Billie was captured as a calf, surfacing in the U.S. in 1966 as a four-year-old. After several years in a private zoo, she joined the circus, where she was trained to perform. Circuses are an extremely demanding environment for elephants, with constant travel from one town to another, multiple shows per week, and continuous noise. Although she learned difficult tricks and was a star, Billie rebelled and began to be known as a difficult elephant, gaining a reputation for attacking her trainers. University Scholarships
The Gilman Scholarship could fund $5000 of your tuition and the next deadline is October 5, 2023, at 11:59 pm Pacific Time!
The Gilman Scholarship was designed to help students of limited financial means have the opportunity to study abroad – online or in-person. Nearly a third of applicants are awarded the scholarship! This is a great opportunity to help cover your tuition.
Students can receive up to $5,000 for travel or virtual programs. The scholarship can be applied to any of our online programs, to our semester programs, or one of our 2-week programs.
Along with their application, students must submit two essays, the Statement of Purpose Essay, and the Community Impact Essay. Students must also upload their transcripts (unofficial or official). For more information on the application guidelines, please click here.

If you are a US citizen receiving a Pell Grant and currently enrolled in college or university, we encourage you to apply for this scholarship. Who can apply: This scholarship is open to all students age 18 and over. You do not have to be a US Citizen. You do not have to be currently in school.
You do not have to complete an application to Loop Abroad in order to be selected for the scholarship. The scholarship winner must be able to complete the Loop Abroad enrollment paperwork, requiring a doctor’s signature, and must meet all safety requirements of program enrollment.
Note: if you have already applied to Loop Abroad and been accepted, you can still apply for this scholarship. If you have made any payments toward tuition and later receive the scholarship, your payments will be refunded.
Criteria for selecting the scholarship recipient:
We will consider financial need, commitment to conservation and/or animal science, academic performance, and ability to be a positive team member as factors in our decision. We are not looking for the applicant with the highest grades or the most animal hours. We are not looking for the applicant with the saddest story. We are looking for a student who embodies Loop Abroad’s values of teamwork, commitment to a cause, and hard work, and for a student who would not be able to otherwise afford Loop Abroad tuition (whether because of household income or recent change in circumstances).
Scholarship details:
This scholarship covers tuition to one Loop Abroad program with a duration of 1 to 2 weeks in the summer of 2024, excluding private groups or faculty-led groups. It is not transferable to other individuals or future semesters. It does not include airfare, travel or medical insurance, passport, college credit fees (optional), visa (if required), or any optional incidentals during your program. Please understand that a full tuition scholarship does not make travel completely free: passport, airfare, and other expenses depend on the program location.
Once a scholarship winner is chosen, the winner will need to complete full application paperwork for Loop Abroad. The winner must then also complete the enrollment paperwork, which includes waiver forms and a medical form signed by a doctor indicating that you are able to safely participate in a travel program.
The scholarship winner agrees that Loop Abroad may publicize the awarding of the scholarship, including the recipient’s information such as name and current university. The scholarship winner will be subject to all regular rules of participating in a Loop Abroad program.

Details:
The scholarship will be credited toward tuition for the winning student toward the Loop Abroad program of their choice.
The scholarship is non-transferable. If the student cannot attend, the scholarship will be void – it is not a cash prize and cannot be paid as such. Applicants must be over the age of 18. Citizens and residents of any country may apply.
Loop Abroad reserves the right not to grant a travel scholarship if there are no qualified applicants who have applied by the deadline.
The Gilman-McCain Scholarship is a congressionally funded initiative of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and named after the late Senator John S. McCain from Arizona.
This scholarship is open to US citizen undergraduate students who are child dependents of active duty service members and receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid. Students can receive awards of up to $5,000 for 2+ weeks of international travel or online programs. The scholarship can be applied to any of our online programs, semester programs, or 2-week travel programs.

The Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. This scholarship is open to both US citizens and permanent residents who are undergraduate students at a two-year or four-year college or university.
Recipients can receive up to $3,000 in awards for summer programs. This scholarship can be applied to our Thailand programs for 2+ weeks.

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) invests in promising students with financial needs who wish to study abroad. Potential applicants who meet our eligibility requirements may participate in any international education program that meets their academic objectives.
This scholarship is open to US citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or university in the US. Scholarships range from $1,250 – $10,000.
Along with their application, students must submit a financial aid form (filled out by the financial aid office at their school), one recommendation letter, and a copy of their unofficial transcript.

For the 8th consecutive year, we will be awarding an annual college scholarship to an individual that best demonstrates to us why “Aging Matters” to them.
