The South Africa Pre-Vet Big Cats program in South Africa program is a two-week adventure of a lifetime that gives you the opportunity to volunteer at a cheetah breeding and conservation facility as well as a big cat wildlife ranch, learn about African wildlife hands-on, go on safari in a nearby game reserve, and take “Biology and Conservation of Big Cats” taught by Loop vets right alongside the cats themselves. The program project site is accredited by both PAAZA (Pan African Association of Zoos and Aquariums) and WAZA (World Association of Zoos and Aquariums), and home to many amazing animals beyond cheetahs as well. Though the volunteer facility isn’t a hospital, you will be gaining valuable experience learning and implementing the important work conservation and zoo vets do.

This program is designed for university-aged students who are interested in becoming veterinarians or working professionally with animals. Participants must be at least 18 years old. Most are 18 to 25, but we also accept full-time undergraduates over 25.
You do not need to currently be in college, have a specific major or degree, or have any veterinary experience for either program. Individuals of any nationality may apply.
Each group of up to 12 students will have its own veterinarian.

Interest-free payment plans are available. Current college students may be able to use federal financial aid toward their tuition. Your space is not held until your $1,000 deposit (credited toward tuition) is paid.
Airfare on the group flight from New York, NY is estimated at $2,200 round-trip including taxes and fees. Participants must fly on the group flight unless otherwise arranged with Loop Abroad (fees apply to flying off the group itinerary). This program has an international flight from New York to Johannesburg and then domestically from Johannesburg to George. Depending on the group flight arrival time, you may stay the night with your staff at an airport hotel and depart for George early Monday morning. The South Africa domestic flight and the hotel stay are included in the tuition and airfare estimate.
The Gilman Scholarship could fund $5000 of your tuition plus there is an additional STEM Supplemental Award of $1000 you an apply for. The next round of applications opens mid-August and the deadline is March 5, 2026, at 11:59pm Pacific Time.

You can receive 3 credits from the University of Findlay for this program. (Additional fee applies.) Loop Abroad can also assist you in working to get credit directly from your school. This is a study abroad program and all students will participate in the lectures, labs, and assignments in the schedule. Credit is optional and can be removed anytime before April 1.

You will receive a certificate for 80 service hours upon program completion. You will be supervised by a teaching veterinarian in your classroom lectures, clinic time, labs, and animal activities, While you will need to track and calculate your own breakdown of veterinary, research, and animal experience hours based on your specific program schedule, you can plan on approximately 10 research hours and about 70 hours in total of veterinary and animal experience hours.
Join all two week courses in South Africa for a summer semester! This six week adventure is a combination of the Zoo Medicine, Big Cats, and Wildlife Research programs. There is an additional domestic airfare cost to get to the Big Cats location (estimated at $200). Domestic ground transportation in South Africa is included for other locations. Credit is included at no additional cost when traveling on June 27- August 9.
This summer semester is a combination of six of our most popular 2-week modules in South Africa, Thailand, and Costa Rica. This semester offers 19 course credits, 150+ hours working with a veterinarian and 215+ additional hours of animal experience and research.
Cango Wildlife Ranch is situated in the town of Oudtshoorn, which is famous for its Cango Caves, Ostrich farms and the Cango Wildlife Ranch. It offers beautiful views of the Karoo area from high up in the Swartberg mountains, magnificent ostrich palaces and five star game reserves, as well as being the Ostrich Capital of the World.
A nature lovers dream, the area around Oudtshoorn is comprised of a vast wilderness area including the 121 000 hectare Swartberg nature reserve and adjoining 8 000 hectare Gamkaskloof reserve. The free-roaming game of the area ranges from large carnivores such as the Cape Leopard to the rarely seen aardvark, birds and reptiles.
Cango wildlife Ranch is an accredited facility with PAAZA (One of only handful in Africa), WAZA member, and a member of the Madagascar Fauna and Flora Group.
The ranch is home to big cat species including lions, leopards, tigers, and cheetahs at the cheetah preservation center. Other animals living on the property include two-toed sloths, pygmy hippo, ring-tailed and brown lemurs, and a number of reptile and bird species including the cape vulture.
Cango Wildlife Ranch supports breeding and educational programs for cheetahs, Pygmy hippos & Radiated Tortoises.
Housing is at Zindagos, Cango’s onsite housing. Rooms are 2-4 dependent on the number of students with bunk and single beds with an attached bathroom. The lodge has a kitchen area, lounge area, and outside area to hang out with your cohort in your free time.
All meals are included in your tuition. Students are provided breakfast essentials like eggs, cereal, fruit, bread, cheese, milk, coffee, tea, butter, etc. and are expected to make their own breakfasts in the morning. Cango has a volunteer menu at the ranch that students can order from each morning for lunch. A different home-cooked meal is provided every night by the staff at Zindagos. At the beginning of each week they post a menu for the whole week and it usually includes traditional South African meals or other types of meals.
George is located in the Western Cape of South Africa. It is a mountainous region known for its natural beauty.
South Africa seasons are opposite of what you typically experience in the states. Winter weather is experienced during the months of May to August.
Average temperatures range from a high of 71°F to a low of 54°F in May to 67°F to a low of 46°F in August. 
You arrive in Johannesburg on the first Sunday of your program – exit baggage claim to find your staff waiting with a sign at the large statue in the center of the arrival hall. For morning group arrivals, your group travels together to have lunch (included) and then checks in for your afternoon domestic flight from Johannesburg to George. Cango staff meets us at George Airport and we are transported by bus for the one hour ride to Cango Wildlife Ranch. For afternoon group arrivals, after meeting your staff, you travel together to the hotel for the night. This is a 5 minute walk or a quick shuttle drive from the airport. Have a chance to shower, eat dinner at a scheduled group time, and then rest before your early morning domestic flight tomorrow from Johannesburg to George.
Monday is a full-day orientation and tour of Cango Wildlife Ranch. Tuesday to Friday all follow a similar schedule. Breakfast is self-service and you have until 8:00 am to grab breakfast on your own time (provided in tuition). Daily work begins shortly after, and the group splits into smaller groups for different tasks each day. Don’t worry -you are briefed every night on the tasks for the next day. Tasks may include: welfare checks, animal training, ambassador training and encounter, enclosure maintenance, cheetah run, food preparation and feeding, and enrichment.
Because big cats eat meat, this will mean cutting up meat, including antelope and other animals who have been hit by cars. You will not have to slaughter any live animals for food, but will have to be able to butcher dead animals for the cheetahs to eat.
There are short, hands-on interactions with the cheetahs in small groups, including feeding opportunities and meeting a cheetah ambassador. You may have a chance to help socialize with young cheetahs (involves close contact but not touching), but this is not guaranteed.
There is daily tea time from 10:00- 10:30 am, and lunch is at the restaurant at the ranch with a set menu to choose your meal from 1:00- 2:00 pm. Lectures and hands-on labs follow lunch each afternoon until around dinner time. Your support staff generally organizes a few night activities, like a game night or movie night.
Veterinary labs can include blow dart labs, drug calculations, enrichment design, assisting with ambassador programs, necropsies, and more. While we do NOT purchase dead animals for necropsy, we may use an already-dead animal that is being used to feed the cheetahs to practice necropsy, suture, and surgical skills.
For the mid-program weekend, pack an overnight bag for your safari weekend to Buffelsdrift. On Saturday we all make the short drive over, and then go on a night safari drive and have dinner on site. Sunday morning, we head out for a morning safari drive, followed by breakfast. After breakfast, we pack up and head back to Cango for lunch at the ranch. You’ll have time for a shopping trip while off-site.
The second week follows the same schedule as the first. Reviews and study time are given on Thursday for your exam on Friday. Friday night is a campfire evening for one last hoorah with the group! Saturday is departure day and students are transported back to the George airport for their flight back to Johannesburg with their support staff. Staff accompanies students to their check in counter for the international flight back home from Johannesburg.
You have an opportunity to work with and observe cheetahs closely each day, but this is not a program designed for you to snuggle with wild animals. Hands-on contact is limited to safe, short interactions that do not cause the animals undue stress, participation in training exercises when available, and necessary medical treatment and observation on anesthetized animals.
Zoo medicine, conservation medicine, and care for wild and captive animals focuses observation over handling when possible, and this program adheres to those standards.

Loop Abroad is offering one FULL TUITION scholarship to cover tuition for one one-week program in the US, one two-week program in Thailand, or a virtual course, excluding private groups and faculty-led groups. We’re proud to add this to the list of scholarships for pre-vet programs.
Who can apply: This scholarship is open to all students age 18 and over. You do not have to be a US Citizen. You do not have to be currently in school.
You do not have to complete an application to Loop Abroad in order to be selected for the scholarship. The scholarship winner must be able to complete the Loop Abroad enrollment paperwork, requiring a doctor’s signature, and must meet all safety requirements of program enrollment.
Note: if you have already applied to Loop Abroad and been accepted, you can still apply for this scholarship. If you have made any payments toward tuition and later receive the scholarship, your payments will be refunded.
Criteria for selecting the scholarship recipient:
We will consider financial need, commitment to conservation and/or animal science, academic performance, and ability to be a positive team member as factors in our decision. We are not looking for the applicant with the highest grades or the most animal hours. We are not looking for the applicant with the saddest story. We are looking for a student who embodies Loop Abroad’s values of teamwork, commitment to a cause, and hard work, and for a student who would not be able to otherwise afford Loop Abroad tuition (whether because of household income or recent change in circumstances).
Scholarship details:
This scholarship covers tuition to one one-week Loop Abroad program taking place in the USA, one two-week Loop Abroad program taking place in Thailand, or one virtual Loop Abroad program, excluding private groups or faculty-led groups. It is not transferable to other individuals or future semesters. It does not include airfare, travel or medical insurance, passport, college credit fees (optional), visa (if required), or any optional incidentals during your program. Some programs may be full and may not have space available. Please understand that a full tuition scholarship does not make travel completely free: passport, airfare, and other expenses depend on the program location.
Once a scholarship winner is chosen, the winner will need to complete full application paperwork for Loop Abroad. The winner must then also complete the enrollment paperwork, which includes waiver forms and a medical form signed by a doctor indicating that you are able to safely participate in a travel program.
The scholarship winner agrees that Loop Abroad may publicize the awarding of the scholarship, including the recipient’s information such as name and current university. The scholarship winner will be subject to all regular rules of participating in a Loop Abroad program.

The scholarship will be credited toward tuition for the winning student toward one of the specified Loop Abroad programs.
The scholarship is non-transferable. If the student cannot attend, the scholarship will be void – it is not a cash prize and cannot be paid as such. Applicants must be over the age of 18. Citizens and residents of any country may apply.
Loop Abroad reserves the right not to grant a travel scholarship if there are no qualified applicants who have applied by the deadline.
The Gilman-McCain Scholarship is a congressionally funded initiative of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and named after the late Senator John S. McCain from Arizona.
This scholarship is open to US citizen undergraduate students who are child dependents of active duty service members and receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid. Students can receive awards of up to $5,000 for 2+ weeks of international travel or online programs. The scholarship can be applied to any of our online programs, semester programs, or 2-week travel programs.

The Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. This scholarship is open to both US citizens and permanent residents who are undergraduate students at a two-year or four-year college or university.
Recipients can receive up to $3,000 in awards for summer programs. This scholarship can be applied to our Thailand programs for 2+ weeks.

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) invests in promising students with financial needs who wish to study abroad. Potential applicants who meet our eligibility requirements may participate in any international education program that meets their academic objectives.
This scholarship is open to US citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or university in the US. Scholarships range from $1,250 – $10,000.

The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) seeks to improve the treatment of animals everywhere—in the laboratory, on the farm, in commerce, at home, and in the wild. The 2026-27 scholarship cycle will open for applications on November 24. Recipients will be announced by May 1, 2026. There are up to 12 awards of $3,000 available. SeniorCare.com continues to bring more awareness to the key issues we face as an aging population. They award an annual college scholarship to an individual that best demonstrates why “Aging Matters” to them. A $1500 scholarship is given annually to a selected college student that currently cares for an aging loved one, works within the senior community, or intends to pursue a career that will have an impact on the elder population. Any existing student (or incoming freshman), in good academic standing, at a 2- or 4-year accredited college can apply for this scholarship.
