Courses and Hours

This program is created with students who may want to apply to vet school in mind. For your application to vet school, the program provides approximately the following hours:

Veterinary Hours: 50
Research Hours: 30

Students can calculate their own record of hours for their VMCAS or other applications but will earn at least this many hours.

The AVMA says, “If you have the opportunity to work… for veterinarians who work with different species, that’s a bonus that can make you more appealing to a veterinary school admissions committee.” We’re proud to offer you that opportunity!

The strongest veterinary recommendation letter is from a vet who has known and worked with you for at least a year. However, you will have a chance to build a relationship with your Loop Abroad teaching vet who may be able to write you a recommendation if you impress them with your performance and are able to build on your experience after your program.

This program provides a total of 80 service hours. Loop Abroad is a certifying organization for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, for which those hours are eligible.

A transcript for 3 college credits is available for this program (additional fee applies). This course is the academic component of your program. You may also be able to get credit directly from your college or university for this program. If you are seeking credit from your college or university, please contact us for any assistance needed.

Locations

Bali is the morning of the world.” – Jawaharlal Nehru

Bali is a province of Indonesia and the westernmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands. It has its own international airport, where you’ll arrive and depart.

Bali is home to famously beautiful rice terraces, amazing snorkeling, and a relaxed and inviting atmosphere from the coast to inland. The beaches, made famous by surfers from around the world, are often home to surf too rough for swimming, but are a beautiful place to spend sunrise or sunset.

Visitors to Bali are often drawn to the beautiful Indonesian food, tropical fruits, local coffee, stunning waterfalls and forest views, picturesque temples, and activities such as yoga and massage.

You will split your program between Ubud and the Serangan area, giving you a chance to get to know two different sides of Bali. Perched in the central highlands, Ubud is home to breathtaking waterfalls, sweeping rice paddies, and rich culture, and has street markets, shops, restaurants, cafes, temples, and forests full of macaques to explore. Serangan, along the coast, brings you up close with sea turtle conservation and opportunities to get out by boat to some of the most admired snorkel spots in the world.

While about 90% of Indonesians are Muslim, Indonesia is not officially a Muslim country. In Bali, you will find both visitors and locals dressed in shorts and tee shirts.

The weather in Bali in July may surprise you – it is generally around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (average is 75 – 88), and can be in the 70s in the evenings.

Itinerary

In this two-week program, you’ll work and learn alongside veterinarians and project experts at a cat sanctuary and hospital and at a sea turtle conservation project. Follow every step of the sea turtle conservation process, from night beach patrols and egg collection to hatching and growth to the young turtles’ release back into the ocean, as well as visiting the hospital that treats sea turtles and other marine life. Observe and assist in cat sterilization surgeries and learn about all aspects of caring for domestic cats. And experience the charm and beauty of Bali first-hand.

Week 1 – Cat Clinic and Ubud

This program is divided into two weeks. In one week, you will work with your Loop Abroad teaching vet at a cat shelter in Ubud, Bali. You’ll take part in a range of fun and cultural activities as well as learning and practicing clinical skills, including:

  • Ubud Water Palace visit
  • Visit local street markets
  • Monkey forest visit
  • Yoga class
  • Indonesian art lesson
  • Free time to explore Ubud
  • IM, IV, and Sub-Q injections and catheter placement
  • Blood draws, blood smears, and microscope skills
  • Sterile scrubbing and gloving
  • Instrument handling and suturing
  • Ear cytologies, skin scrapes, fecals, and other diagnostics
  • Calculating medication dosages and administering medication
  • Physical exams and stethoscope use
  • Shadowing of feline spay and neuter surgeries, assisting in anesthesia monitoring and recovery
  • Identifying tropical diseases
  • Shadowing treatment for cats in on-site clinic

Students are in the examination room in small groups, assisting with procedures and surgeries and learning hands-on from the Loop Abroad vet and the project staff. Each day will have a lecture-style portion at the clinic and a chance to put the skills learned into practice helping animals in need and learning from the team. With hundreds of cats on site, there is a lot to learn.

In the evenings and over the weekend, we will have a chance to explore city life in Ubud and the surrounding area, including visits to local street markets for eating and shopping, dinners at local restaurants, a yoga class, an art class, a city tour, visits to the Water Palace and the monkey forest, and some chances to relax in the city and at home.

Please note that two evenings of this week, dinner will be at your own budget as it will take place during free time to explore Ubud. There are great options ranging from under $10 to quite expensive depending on your budget and choice of restaurant.

Week 2 – Sea Turtle Conservation

The other week is spent learning about sea turtles and volunteering with a respected sea turtle conservation and education facility in a specially-tailored volunteer program. You will participate in all aspects of the site’s work in sea turtle conservation, including:

• Night patrols to look for nesting turtles, collecting the eggs for safe incubation at the center

• Monitoring eggs on-site

• Weighing, measuring, and collecting data on on-site turtles

• When applicable, helping to transport injured sea turtles or other marine life to the hospital and observe their care (not guaranteed)

• Releasing hatched sea turtles who are ready back into the wild

In addition, your vet will help you learn about sea turtle anatomy and physiology, behavior, care, parasites and diseases, and monitoring in the wild.

We will have an opportunity to spend one weekend day on a full-day snorkel tour which transports us by ferry out to the smaller islands, which are famous for their marine life and snorkeling. Snorkel sites around Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida, where you will see corals and tropical fish and can potentially sea sea turtles, eels, and manta rays (weather permitting). Snorkel gear is provided, including a life jacket for those who want one.

This program provides you the opportunities in veterinary medicine and wildlife conservation, in companion animal and aquatics, in the highlands and at the shore, swinging into the clouds and delving deep under the ocean surface. In just two weeks, you’ll explore animal care in Bali from a number of different perspectives.

Note: Either of these two weeks may come first in your itinerary.
