The two-week Costa Rica Pre-Vet Wildlife Medicine: Rescue Center program is based at a wildlife rescue center that rehabilitates, reintroduces, and cares for animals who are victims of wildlife trafficking, human animal conflict, or who otherwise need care. In addition to learning about the animals of Costa Rica and their conservation and care in the sanctuary and veterinary clinic, you’ll also get a chance to explore the famous Manuel Antonio National Park and famous Poas Volcano.
You can optionally earn 4 credits studying wildlife conservation during this program. The course includes observing and learning about the animals at the facility and learning from your veterinary trip leader and your on-site local veterinarian in the classroom, clinic, and rescue center.
This program is designed for university-aged students who are interested in becoming veterinarians or working professionally with animals. Participants must be at least 18 years old. Most are 18 to 25, but we also accept full-time undergraduates over 25.
There are no pre-requisites for this program. You do not need to be in school currently to apply. Individuals of any nationality may apply.
Each group of up to 10-12 students will have its own teaching veterinarian and the groups will share site staff. All programming is in English – no Spanish skills are required (but if you have them, you’ll definitely use them!)

The dates above indicate the day you must arrive in San Jose and depart from San Jose, which may mean leaving the US the day prior or returning the day after, depending on your flight time and beginning travel location.
Please note that there is no group flight for this program. Students will be picked up and dropped off at the San Jose airport.
It’s important to note that the animals at the wildlife facility will vary. This is a true rehab and release program, so lots of animals come and go. But there are some animals who have been on-site for a long time, and whom we can expect to see when we’re there.
You can receive 4 credits from the University of Findlay for this program. (Additional fee applies.) Loop Abroad can also assist you in working to get credit directly from your school. This is a study abroad program and all students will participate in the lectures, labs, and assignments in the schedule. Credit is optional and can be removed anytime before April 1.
You will receive a certificate for 75 service hours upon program completion.
You will be supervised by a teaching veterinarian in your classroom lectures, clinic time, labs, and animal activities – you should calculate your experience hours based on your actual participation, but we estimate 50 veterinary hours, 20 animal hours, and 8 research hours.

You will be living at a wildlife facility for the duration of your program, and our housing will be only for Loop Abroad students and staff. Housing is shared rooms with bunk beds, which have screened windows and fans. Shared bathrooms have hot and cold water. You will be given a voucher for 2 kilograms of laundry per week and additional laundry will be $2 per kilogram. Laundry service is located a short walk outside the center.
All meals are included in your tuition. Lunch is served buffet-style. We can accommodate vegetarian and vegan diets and food allergies with advanced requests.
Please note that this is a project that offers simple, rustic lodging and food.
Tuition is $4,695.
Interest-free payment plans are available. Current college students may be able to use federal financial aid toward their tuition. Your space is not held until your $1,000 deposit (credited toward tuition) is paid.
Tuition is all-inclusive except for airfare. Tuition does not include medical insurance (the policy we suggest is under $25), a passport, snacks, etc.
Airfare is not included. There is no group flight for this program. We will have multiple pick-ups and drop-off times at the San Jose airport on arrival and departure day. Your transportation between the San Jose airport and the program location is provided and included in your tuition.

The Costa Rica Wildlife: Rescue Center combined with the Costa Rica Pre-Vet Shelter Med and Dolphin Research program allows you to get wildlife, exotics, and small animal veterinary hours as well as research hours on a wild dolphin research project.
The 6-week summer semester perfect for students who are unable to take a full semester abroad during the year but want an immersive study abroad experience. This program offers the programs from the Costa Rica 4-week Experience with an additional two weeks working in sea turtle research at the coast.
This summer semester is a combination of six of our most popular 2-week modules in South Africa, Thailand, and Costa Rica. This semester offers 19 course credits, 150+ hours working with a veterinarian and 215+ additional hours of animal experience and research.
The rescue center works to help abandoned, sick, or injured animals and, ideally, re-release them into the wild. During your program, you will live on site at the center.
You will arrive at the main international airport in San Jose, and Loop Abroad will provide transportation to the project. Housing is on-site and our housing area is reserved for Loop Abroad participants and staff. We will live, eat, study, work, and volunteer on the project site.
During the program, we will enjoy visiting and exploring Manuel Antonio National Park. This beautiful nature reserve is a gem of Costa Rica and is high on any visitor’s list, and will give you the chance to see some of the wildlife of Costa Rica in its natural habitat.
This itinerary is subject to change, but should give you a good overall program feel.
You will arrive in San Jose on Sunday and meet your group. We will then travel together to the rescue center. (We will advise you on what time to arrive if you’d like to minimize waiting time to meet your group.)
We will have the day to get oriented and learn the ins and outs of our new home for the next two weeks. Starting Monday morning, your weekdays will be full with a combination of:
You will learn from your veterinarians and the local vet, both through lecture and labs. You’ll work alongside the vets and facility staff to participate in rotations on the Animal Team, Sloth Team, Study/Enrichments Team, and Vet Team.
In the evenings, we will enjoy dinner together relax as a group at our housing on-site. There is a pool and wifi on site.
We’ll take a break and travel to Manuel Antonio National Park. This is a breathtaking place and really fun to explore, hike, and relax. You’ll also get the chance to see a volcano, waterfall, hot springs, and more in beautiful Costa Rica. This excursion and all activities are included – we will return in the evenings to our housing.
We will return to San Jose on the final program Saturday for departing flights. Overall, this program is a chance to explore wildlife medicine in Costa Rica while getting to see first-hand how a successful conservation project runs.

Who can apply: This scholarship is open to all students age 18 and over. You do not have to be a US Citizen. You do not have to be currently in school.
You do not have to complete an application to Loop Abroad in order to be selected for the scholarship. The scholarship winner must be able to complete the Loop Abroad enrollment paperwork, requiring a doctor’s signature, and must meet all safety requirements of program enrollment.
Note: if you have already applied to Loop Abroad and been accepted, you can still apply for this scholarship. If you have made any payments toward tuition and later receive the scholarship, your payments will be refunded.
Criteria for selecting the scholarship recipient:
We will consider financial need, commitment to conservation and/or animal science, academic performance, and ability to be a positive team member as factors in our decision. We are not looking for the applicant with the highest grades or the most animal hours. We are not looking for the applicant with the saddest story. We are looking for a student who embodies Loop Abroad’s values of teamwork, commitment to a cause, and hard work, and for a student who would not be able to otherwise afford Loop Abroad tuition (whether because of household income or recent change in circumstances).
Scholarship details:
This scholarship covers tuition to one one-week Loop Abroad program taking place in the USA, one two-week Loop Abroad program taking place in Thailand, or one virtual Loop Abroad program, excluding private groups or faculty-led groups. It is not transferable to other individuals or future semesters. It does not include airfare, travel or medical insurance, passport, college credit fees (optional), visa (if required), or any optional incidentals during your program. Some programs may be full and may not have space available. Please understand that a full tuition scholarship does not make travel completely free: passport, airfare, and other expenses depend on the program location.
Once a scholarship winner is chosen, the winner will need to complete full application paperwork for Loop Abroad. The winner must then also complete the enrollment paperwork, which includes waiver forms and a medical form signed by a doctor indicating that you are able to safely participate in a travel program.
The scholarship winner agrees that Loop Abroad may publicize the awarding of the scholarship, including the recipient’s information such as name and current university. The scholarship winner will be subject to all regular rules of participating in a Loop Abroad program.

The scholarship will be credited toward tuition for the winning student toward one of the specified Loop Abroad programs.
The scholarship is non-transferable. If the student cannot attend, the scholarship will be void – it is not a cash prize and cannot be paid as such. Applicants must be over the age of 18. Citizens and residents of any country may apply.
Loop Abroad reserves the right not to grant a travel scholarship if there are no qualified applicants who have applied by the deadline.
The Gilman-McCain Scholarship is a congressionally funded initiative of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and named after the late Senator John S. McCain from Arizona.
This scholarship is open to US citizen undergraduate students who are child dependents of active duty service members and receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid. Students can receive awards of up to $5,000 for 2+ weeks of international travel or online programs. The Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. This scholarship is open to both US citizens and permanent residents who are undergraduate students at a two-year or four-year college or university.
Recipients can receive up to $3,000 in awards for summer programs. This scholarship can be applied to our Thailand programs for 2+ weeks.

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) invests in promising students with financial needs who wish to study abroad. Potential applicants who meet our eligibility requirements may participate in any international education program that meets their academic objectives.
