If two weeks isn’t enough, you can stay in Thailand with Loop Abroad for four weeks in the summer – or even travel in Thailand with us for a full 12-week semester during the school year!
Spend a full month exploring Thailand from the rain forests in the North to the coral reefs in the South. For one half of the program, you’ll join expert conservationists studying and protecting these delicate ecosystems. The other half of the program puts you alongside a veterinarian on our signature Thailand College Pre-Vet Medicine program for a week learning small animal medicine and one week learning elephant medicine.
Loop Abroad offers a full pre-veterinary semester in Thailand in Fall or Spring, offering over 20 credits and hundreds of veterinary hours. This high-demand semester is excellent preparation for students planning to apply to vet school.
This summer semester is a combination of six of our most popular 2-week modules in South Africa, Thailand, and Costa Rica. This semester offers 19 course credits, 150+ hours working with a veterinarian and 215+ additional hours of animal experience and research.
We’re extremely excited to show you what Northern Thailand has to offer. Chiang Mai is home to many of our staff and a very special place in the hearts of all of our students. It offers unparalleled cultural experiences in a safe, comfortable environment.
Affectionately known as the “Rose of the North,” Chiang Mai draws over one million tourists a year from all over the world. It is the largest city in Northern Thailand, over 400 miles from Bangkok. Culturally, it is a world away, set in a mountainous rainforest.
Chiang Mai is a city of surprises and contradictions. Once the center of the ancient Lanna kingdom, the old city walls and brick Buddhist stupas remind passers-by of the city’s 700-year history.
Scooters and tuk-tuks zip by an old man peddling his tricycle taxi. A janitor kneels to offer rice and incense at a spirit house in front of the luxury shopping mall. The market air is rich with the smell of curry spices. Across the road, a cafe sells cappuccinos in air-conditioning with high-speed internet.
It’s this mix of local and global, ancient and modern, West and East that makes Chiang Mai an exciting place to live and learn. Come explore beautiful Chiang Mai with us!
The Dog Rescue Clinic is about 45 minutes from the heart of Chiang Mai. Here, students spend their days learning about veterinary medicine and assisting Thai veterinarians to provide free care and sterilizations to dogs and cats in need.
For years, Loop Abroad proudly supported the Animal Rescue Kingdom (ARK), a dog rescue run solely on donations. In 2018, we were finally able to open the Dog Rescue Clinic just down the road to provide even better veterinary support for local dogs throughout the community.

At the sanctuary, the elephants are provided space to roam, food to eat, and regular medical care by the three full-time veterinarians. Most importantly, the females and young males are allowed to form close-knit social groups where, as the Lek describes it, they “teach each other how to be elephants again” after years of social isolation practices used by industry to control their behavior.
The sanctuary is vast, peaceful, and amazing.
For students spending a week here, you’ll wake up to trunk-trumpeting and thumping behind your room. In the morning, look out the window to see the fog lifting and just a few feet away. A mother elephant throws dirt over its back while a baby elephant ruffles through the tall grass with its trunk. For the rest of the day, you’ll be a part of their family. It’s like living in a wildlife documentary.
For week-long volunteers, each day at the Elephant Nature Park is different, but the general schedule includes a rotating set of responsibilities shared by the volunteers and the staff: buying, cutting, and picking food for the elephants (no small task), and cleaning up after the elephants. Students participating in our Veterinary Service programs will also shadow the team of Thai veterinarians who make rounds doing check-ups, cleaning wounds, monitoring infections, or treating more serious diseases or injuries.
The best part of the ENP experience is the time volunteers have to independently learn about and interact with the elephants and their caretakers. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about animal behaviors, elephant family behaviors, local conservation efforts, and the local animal habitats.
Rescuing as many animals as possible has led ENP to become quite the menagerie. In addition to elephants, the park has rescued over 500 dogs, most of whom were rescued from the 2011 flooding in Bangkok. The park is also home to over 2000 cats (living in Cat Kingdom!) as well as water buffalo, cats, pigs, chickens, and rabbits, and there may be opportunities to help with any and all animals at the park depending on their current needs.
Learn about why we don’t ride elephants here.
ENP in the News
National Geographic tells the story of Lek’s founding of the park and her courageous care for one baby elephant stranded at only one week old.
This Washington Post story explains why many elephants at ENP are blind in at least one eye.
Out of dozens of tourist spots, Lonely Planet recommends ENP as one of only two places to “interact ethically” with elephants in Northern Thailand.
ENP is an endless source of entertaining elephant video clips to brighten your day. Here’s one of Navaan taunting one of the park dogs.
The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association recently presented founder Lek Chailert with the Shining World Compassion Award for demonstrating “a pure heart, loving concern, and selfless service and caring for Thailand’s magnificent elephants.”
Dogs too!
The Elephant Nature Park isn’t home to just elephants. It’s home to buffalo, cows, cats, dogs, and chickens. There are dogs who live among the elephants and welcome visitors when they arrive who have always been a part of the ENP. But after the floods in Bangkok in 2011, Lek and her husband Darrick and the people at the ENP set out specifically to rescue the dogs abandoned in the floods and give them a home.
The mission of the ENP is to provide dogs with a place of refuge and a peaceful, permanent living environment. Each dog gets individual medical care, attention, care, and space. In addition to providing a long-term animal care facility, the ENP also provides community outreach services to residents in the areas surrounding the park. Subsidized preventative health care services and sterilizations surgeries help to keep pets healthy and stem the prevent overpopulation of street animals.
Since 2011, the park has taken in over 800 dogs into its Dog Sanctuary. Over 200 were rescued from the flooding in Bangkok, and hundreds more have been rescued from local villages, puppy mills, or from the dog meat trade.
Being at the Elephant Nature Park for a week will give students the chance to help some dogs who are in great need of love, attention, and care. The Dog Sanctuary welcomes students to put together a donation of collars, leashes, toys, towels and blankets.

Buddhism informs both faith and lifestyle in Thailand, where a high tolerance for differences, an emphasis on harmony with other people and the environment, and a focus on kindness and tranquility make for pleasant interactions with most of the locals. Almost all Thais are Buddhists.
The culture is very respectful, and elders and the prevalent orange-robed monks are treated with deference and care. Above all, respect for King and images of the Buddha reigns supreme. Visitors will notice that Thais stop in the street in silence when the National Anthem plays, and always lower themselves before an image of the Buddha or the King.
In addition to the lovely people of Thailand, the country itself has vast and splendidly diverse offerings for travelers. The landscape varies greatly, from rice paddies along the Mekong River to turquoise waters and bright coral reefs to misty black mountains bordering lush rainforests.
The types of wildlife in Thailand are numerous and fascinating. From rare orchids and lotuses to bamboo forests, from endangered tigers and Asian elephants to sun bears and gibbons, Thailand is known for its wilderness offerings. Scuba diving in the South and trekking to the secluded hill tribe villages in the North are two particular draws.
Thailand has had a troubled past when it comes to the environment, but in recent decades they have learned that the survival of Thai forests keeps floodwaters at bay and tourism development possible. With logging banned and sustainability initiatives popping up across the nation, it seems possible that the wild elephant population could be replenished with a lot of work.
Festivals and food are also particularly important to Thai culture, and visitors to Thailand find that beautiful cultural experiences can be found in expansive golden temples or simply at a corner stall in the street market.

This program is divided into two weeks. In one week, students work with our staff vet to care for dogs at the Dog Rescue Clinic outside of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Students take part in a range of fun and cultural activities as well as learning and practicing clinical skills, including:

In the evenings and over the weekend, we will have a chance to explore city life in Chiang Mai, including visits to local street markets for eating and shopping, dinners at local restaurants, a meditation lesson with a Buddhist Monk, a city tour, the choice of a ziplining day in the jungle or an outdoor Thai cooking class, a visit to Doi Suthep temple, and some chances to relax in the city and at home.
Week 2 – Elephant Nature ParkThe other week is spent living and volunteering with the elephants at the Elephant Nature Park in a specially-tailored volunteer program. Students work with the elephants, prepare their food, clean their homes, and provide overall care for them. They also help with sanctuary upkeep and have the chance to participate in cultural activities.
In addition, your vet will help you learn about elephant anatomy and physiology, body condition scores, and behavior.

There will be a chance while at the Elephant Nature Park to learn from the elephant vets on staff, help provide medical care to animals in need, and learn about testing for various medical conditions in large mammals. Students may also have opportunity to participate in a diet study, prepare medications, or join any number of other things going on at the park.
Students also generally have the chance to meet world-renowned conservationists and ENP founder Lek Chailert, learn a bit of Thai, and get to know some of the elephants on the property one-on-one.
You’ll notice that elephant riding is not included in this itinerary. Learn about why we don’t ride elephants.
Note: Either the Elephant Nature Park or Chiang Mai week may come first in your itinerary.
Every program begins with a safety orientation. We’ll discuss how to stay safe and healthy during your time in Thailand. We’ll also discuss best practices for staying safe with all of the different species we will be interacting with, and staff will always be on hand to further instruct students regarding safe interactions with animals.
While most dogs are very friendly, some would rather be left alone. It is important to approach all dogs carefully. In order to safely interact with animals in a shelter and clinic setting, students and staff need to have an understanding of animal handling and behavior.
Staff and students will discuss animal behavior, including signs of anxiety, and animal handling and restraint before interacting with the dogs.

You will have the opportunity to get plenty of up-close photos with elephants, but it is important to also allow the elephants to have the freedom to enjoy their natural environment and the company of their elephant friends. It can be even more rewarding to watch the elephants interacting with their natural environment from a distance because this is when their true personalities shine!
Students will always be accompanied by trained guides and volunteer coordinators who will instruct students on how to safely interact with the elephants.
