Spend a whole month in tropical Thailand working with dogs, elephants and marine life in this special 4-week program.
Combine two of our popular programs to spend a full month exploring Thailand from the rain forests in the North to the coral reefs in the South. For one half of the program, you’ll join expert conservationists studying and protecting these delicate ecosystems and enjoy the elephants, sharks, sea turtles, and more that call them home.
The other half of the program puts you alongside a veterinarian whose job is to teach you so you can learn and practice new skills while helping animals in need. Work in a dog shelter or a dog clinic and learn clinical skills including blood draws, suturing, skin scrapes, and assisting in spay and neuter surgeries. Spend one week living at an elephant sanctuary learning about and caring for rescued elephants. Evenings and weekends are filled with fun activities such as zip-lining and exploring street markets.

This program is designed for university-aged students who are interested in becoming veterinarians or working professionally with animals. Participants must be at least 18 years old. Most are 18 to 25, but we also accept full-time undergraduates over 25.
There are no pre-requisites for this program. You do not need to be in school currently to apply. Individuals of any nationality may apply.
Applicants should be comfortable working with animals and getting their hands, and everything else, dirty. You must be able to swim and be physically fit enough for outdoor activities such as hiking and SCUBA diving. This program can accommodate a maximum of 12 participants per session. Courses and excursions in Koh Tao will be led by the researchers and staff at the New Heaven Reef Conservation Program.

Our Thailand 4-Week Experience combines two popular programs: Thailand College Pre-Vet Medicine and Wild Tropics.
Spending a full month in Thailand allows students to maximize their time abroad and save money doing it. Not only is supervision and transportation between programs provided for a seamless transition, you’ll get FREE college credit for both programs (normally $499) and will only pay for airfare once!
Tuition is $7,895. All housing and meals are included in your tuition. Your tuition includes donations to Elephant Nature Park to help fund medicine, food and care for the animals.
Tuition does not include international airfare. Airfare on the group flight from New York, NY is estimated at around $2,000 round-trip including taxes and fees. Participants must fly on the group flight unless otherwise arranged with Loop Abroad (fees apply to flying off the group itinerary).
Interest-free payment plans are available. Current college students may be able to use federal financial aid toward their tuition. Your space is not held until your $2,000 deposit (credited toward tuition) is paid.
Tuition includes all housing, meals, program fees, activities, equipment, and transportation in Thailand (including flight within Thailand and boat travel).
Students may be in double rooms or dorm-style rooms with students of the same gender with twin beds or a shared bed. Rooms do not have air conditioning. Meals will be eaten as a group at local restaurants, mostly serving Western and Thai food. Special diets and food allergies can be accommodated.
The Gilman Scholarship could fund $5000 of your tuition plus there is an additional STEM Supplemental Award of $1000 you an apply for. The next round of applications opens mid-August and the deadline is March 5, 2026, at 11:59pm Pacific Time.

You can receive 6 credits from University of Findlay for this program at no additional cost to you. Loop Abroad can also assist you in working to get credit directly from your school. This is a study abroad program and all students will participate in the lectures, labs, and assignments in the schedule. Credit is optional and can be removed anytime before April 1.
You will receive a certificate for 95 service hours upon program completion.
You will be supervised by a teaching veterinarian in your classroom lectures, clinic time, labs, and animal activities, which includes one work week (5 days) full-time at the clinic with your veterinarian and one week full-time at ENP supervised by your veterinarian. Your marine program week will include a combination of research and animal experience hours. While you will need to track and calculate your own breakdown of veterinary, research, and animal experience hours based on your specific program schedule, you can plan on approximately 30 research hours and about 65 hours in total of veterinary and animal experience hours.

For many students, this will their first time SCUBA diving – and there’s no better place for it!
We accept students of all levels – from zero experience to Advanced Open Water or higher certifications. Each morning, we’ll break into small groups based on experience level for the day so everyone can learn at their own pace. We’ll regroup at dinner.
If you don’t have any SCUBA certification, you’ll have the opportunity to complete your Open Water Diver certification over the first three days. Each day, you’ll study and practice skills with your dive instructor in a small group. After your certification, you’ll join an ecological monitoring and coral restoration dive with New Heavens’ experienced Research and Conservation team.
If you are an Open Water SCUBA diver already, you’ll spend the first two or three days to complete your Advanced Open Water Diver certification in a small group with your dive instructor. After your certification, you’ll join ecological monitoring and coral restoration dives with New Heavens’ experienced Research and Conservation team.
If you’re already an Advanced Open Water SCUBA diver or have a higher certification, you will need to prove your skills on a refresher dive then you’ll jump right in with the experienced Conservation and Research divers! From day one, you’ll learn and practice advanced skills related to marine species identification, coral health monitoring, artificial reef construction and maintenance, and/or other skills. Just like students doing the SCUBA certifications, you may need to attend small group lectures and training to prepare for each day’s conservation dive.
As long as the weather and visibility are good, all students can expect to enjoy 5-6 SCUBA dives.
If four weeks isn’t enough, you can stay in Thailand with Loop Abroad for 6 weeks in the summer – or even travel in Thailand with us for a full 12-week semester during the school year!
Thailand Veterinary Semester: Loop Abroad offers a full pre-veterinary semester in Thailand in Fall or Spring, offering over 20 credits and hundreds of veterinary hours. This high-demand semester is excellent preparation for students planning to apply to vet school.
Global Veterinary Semester: This summer semester is a combination of six of our most popular 2-week modules in South Africa, Thailand, and Costa Rica. This semester offers 19 course credits, 150+ hours working with a veterinarian and 215+ additional hours of animal experience and research.
This itinerary is subject to change, but should give you a good overall program feel.
In the first half of this program, you’ll work and learn alongside veterinarians at an elephant sanctuary and a dog rescue. Live among the elephants and care directly for them, provide check-ups and procedures to dogs in need, and experience magnificent Thailand first-hand.
In the first two weeks, students work with our staff vet to care for dogs at the Dog Rescue Clinic outside of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Students take part in a range of fun and cultural activities as well as learning and practicing clinical skills, including:
IM, IV, and Sub-Q injections and catheter placementStudents are in the examination room in small groups, assisting with procedures and surgeries and learning hands-on from the vet. Each day will have a lecture-style portion at the clinic and a chance to put the skills learned into practice helping animals in need, culminating in two surgery days at the end of the week.
The third week is spent living and volunteering with the elephants at the Elephant Nature Park in a specially-tailored volunteer program. Students work with the elephants, prepare their food, clean their homes, and provide overall care for them. They will also help with sanctuary upkeep and have the chance to participate in cultural activities.
In addition, your vet will help you learn about elephant anatomy and physiology, body condition scores, and behavior.
Students also generally have the chance to meet world-renowned conservationist and ENP founder Lek Chailert, and they get to learn a bit of Thai and get to know some of the elephants on the property one-on-one.There will be a chance while at the Elephant Nature Park to learn from the elephant vet on staff, help provide medical care to animals in need, learn to test for various medical conditions in large mammals, and possibly observe surgical procedures in the on-site dog clinic. Students may also have opportunities to shadow the elephant trainer, participate in a diet study, prepare medications, or any number of other things going on at the park.
You’ll notice that elephant riding is not included in this itinerary. Learn about why we don’t ride elephants.
Outside of your time working with animals, you’ll get to experience many fun activities and cultural experiences.
Spend a day ziplining through the rain forest and learn how ecotourism projects contribute to conservation efforts. Spend 2-3 days in a hilltribe village learning from people who depend on the forest for food, medicine, and shelter.
Try a meditation lesson with Buddhist monks, shop in the city craft and food markets, tour 700-year-old city temples, go on a city tour, visit to Doi Suthep temple, and some chances to relax in the city and at home.
In week 4, we travel by a combination of plane, bus, and ferry to Koh to the island of Koh Tao (“Turtle Island”) in the Gulf of Thailand. There may be an overnight stop on our way.
Each day Monday – Friday: Koh Tao runs on ‘island time’. Being surrounded by palm trees, coconuts, and the sound of the waves just makes people slow down a bit. Here’s the rough plan for each day, but plan to be flexible:

Every program begins with a safety orientation. We’ll discuss how to stay safe and healthy during your time in Thailand. We’ll also discuss best practices for staying safe with all of the different species we will be interacting with, and staff will always be on hand to further instruct students regarding safe interactions with animals.
The New Heaven dive school has an excellent safety record and often hosts student groups like ours. Their experienced team of conservation divers will provide our safety orientation on arrival. In the water, the most important skill is to move slowly and deliberately, observing but not disturbing the many colorful creatures you see. As with most wildlife, patient explorers will find the most amazing species and unusual behaviors.
Above water, Koh Tao is a small but busy community of divers and visitors. It’s a beautiful and exciting place to be, but it’s important to stay with your group and watch your belongings, especially considering we’ll be loading or unloading the boat every day!
Note: All participants must be capable of independently entering and exiting the water by a ladder and must pass a basic swim test (swimming, treading water) in order to safely join in-water activities.
While most dogs are very friendly, some would rather be left alone. It is important to approach all dogs carefully. In order to safely interact with animals in a shelter and clinic setting, students and staff need to have an understanding of animal handling and behavior.
Staff and students will discuss animal behavior, including signs of anxiety, and animal handling and restraint before interacting with the dogs.
At the Elephant Nature Park, we work only with female elephants. Elephants are accompanied by at least one trained caretaker at all times. The Elephant Nature Park has been hosting volunteers since the early 1990s and has an exemplary safety record. All dogs at ARK and the Elephant Nature Park have been vaccinated against rabies.
You will have the opportunity to get plenty of up-close photos with elephants, but it is important to also allow the elephants to have the freedom to enjoy their natural environment and the company of their elephant friends. It can be even more rewarding to watch the elephants interacting with their natural environment from a distance because this is when their true personalities shine!
Students will always be accompanied by trained guides and volunteer coordinators who will instruct students in how to safely interact with the elephants.

Who can apply: This scholarship is open to all students age 18 and over. You do not have to be a US Citizen. You do not have to be currently in school.
You do not have to complete an application to Loop Abroad in order to be selected for the scholarship. The scholarship winner must be able to complete the Loop Abroad enrollment paperwork, requiring a doctor’s signature, and must meet all safety requirements of program enrollment.

Criteria for selecting the scholarship recipient:
We will consider financial need, commitment to conservation and/or animal science, academic performance, and ability to be a positive team member as factors in our decision. We are not looking for the applicant with the highest grades or the most animal hours. We are not looking for the applicant with the saddest story. We are looking for a student who embodies Loop Abroad’s values of teamwork, commitment to a cause, and hard work, and for a student who would not be able to otherwise afford Loop Abroad tuition (whether because of household income or recent change in circumstances).
Scholarship details:
This scholarship covers tuition to one one-week Loop Abroad program taking place in the USA, one two-week Loop Abroad program taking place in Thailand, or one virtual Loop Abroad program, excluding private groups or faculty-led groups. It is not transferable to other individuals or future semesters. It does not include airfare, travel or medical insurance, passport, college credit fees (optional), visa (if required), or any optional incidentals during your program. Some programs may be full and may not have space available. Please understand that a full tuition scholarship does not make travel completely free: passport, airfare, and other expenses depend on the program location.
Once a scholarship winner is chosen, the winner will need to complete full application paperwork for Loop Abroad. The winner must then also complete the enrollment paperwork, which includes waiver forms and a medical form signed by a doctor indicating that you are able to safely participate in a travel program.
The scholarship winner agrees that Loop Abroad may publicize the awarding of the scholarship, including the recipient’s information such as name and current university. The scholarship winner will be subject to all regular rules of participating in a Loop Abroad program.

The scholarship will be credited toward tuition for the winning student toward one of the specified Loop Abroad programs.
The scholarship is non-transferable. If the student cannot attend, the scholarship will be void – it is not a cash prize and cannot be paid as such. Applicants must be over the age of 18. Citizens and residents of any country may apply.
Loop Abroad reserves the right not to grant a travel scholarship if there are no qualified applicants who have applied by the deadline.
The Gilman-McCain Scholarship is a congressionally funded initiative of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and named after the late Senator John S. McCain from Arizona.
This scholarship is open to US citizen undergraduate students who are child dependents of active duty service members and receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid. Students can receive awards of up to $5,000 for 2+ weeks of international travel or online programs. The scholarship can be applied to any of our online programs, semester programs, or 2-week travel programs.

The Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. This scholarship is open to both US citizens and permanent residents who are undergraduate students at a two-year or four-year college or university.
Recipients can receive up to $3,000 in awards for summer programs. This scholarship can be applied to our Thailand programs for 2+ weeks.

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) invests in promising students with financial needs who wish to study abroad. Potential applicants who meet our eligibility requirements may participate in any international education program that meets their academic objectives.
This scholarship is open to US citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or university in the US. Scholarships range from $1,250 – $10,000.
Along with their application, students must submit a financial aid form (filled out by the financial aid office at their school), one recommendation letter, and a copy of their unofficial transcript.

The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) seeks to improve the treatment of animals everywhere—in the laboratory, on the farm, in commerce, at home, and in the wild. The 2026-27 scholarship cycle will open for applications on November 24. Recipients will be announced by May 1, 2026. There are up to 12 awards of $3,000 available. SeniorCare.com continues to bring more awareness to the key issues we face as an aging population. They award an annual college scholarship to an individual that best demonstrates why “Aging Matters” to them. A $1500 scholarship is given annually to a selected college student that currently cares for an aging loved one, works within the senior community, or intends to pursue a career that will have an impact on the elder population. Any existing student (or incoming freshman), in good academic standing, at a 2- or 4-year accredited college can apply for this scholarship. The recipient must demonstrate a unique and admirable understanding and desire to show why “Aging Matters” to them.

At the time of writing, Thailand, Costa Rica, and Belize programs would be eligible for these $1,500 scholarships. The application process for these scholarships does not involve writing an essay or meeting a GPA requirement.
